I tested ten of the best mops on muddy dog prints and kitchen spills, and one clear winner emerged
From self-cleaning buckets to steam scrubbers, these hands-on tested mops will transform how you tackle hard floors

Finding the best mops that actually clean your floors instead of just pushing dirty liquid around can feel impossible. In order to determine the winning selections, I tested 10 contenders on dirty tiles and hardwood floors.
As a dog owner with a pup tracking wet, muddy paw prints throughout the house, my cleaning routine needed a serious upgrade. Having never used a steam mop before, I was also eager to see if thermal power could outperform traditional water buckets.
Until recently, I’ve only ever used a standard mop – my trusty Vileda Turbo Deep Clean Spin Mop from Amazon has seen me through years of household messes. But from smart water-splitting mechanisms to electric steam cleaners, these remarkable designs have truly transformed the way I clean.

How I tested the best mops

I tested each mop against the messiest real-life situations to see which made the best of a bad situation. I tested them on a mix of sealed hardwood, tiled kitchen floors, and high-traffic hallway vinyl. To test the cleaning effectiveness, I created patches of different dirt types, including dried coffee, sticky fruit juice and tracked-in mud, and measured how many passes it took for each mop to fully clean the surface.
I also checked out how the machines performed when manoeuvring around furniture legs, how easy they are to store, how well the spray function or steam levels work, and finally how easy the mop heads are to clean or replace.
The best mops

Best mop overall & best mop and bucket set
Type: Dual-chamber flat mop and bucket set
Capacity: Up to 70 m² coverage per fill
Handle: Telescopic adjustable handle (116cm–138cm)
Head Type: 360-degree rotating head with machine-washable microfiber pad
Key Feature: SprayClean™ mechanism that isolates dirty rinse water and applies fresh water
If you can’t stand the thought of dipping your unclean mop into a dirty shared bucket of even dirtier water, then this system is perfection. I’ll admit it takes a little bit of muscle to push the mop down into the wringing mechanism at first, but the results make it completely worth it.
The unique double bucket chamber actively directs dirty water to a lower compartment as it sprays fresh water onto the pad, so you won’t push the dirtier water around your house. The clever precise-dosing feature of the bucket stops you from over-wetting your floors, which means your timber and tiles dry almost instantly.
It’s also easily the most attractive mop set I’ve seen; it looks so sleek that you don’t feel the need to hide the bucket away in a utility room cupboard immediately after cleaning.

Best steam mop
Also available from Shark
Type: Automatic steam mop with rotating scrub pads
Power Source: Corded electric
Modes: 3 automatic steam settings (Light, Normal, Deep)
Weight: Approx. 3.1kg
Key Feature: Motorised rotating pads (150 RPM) with steam blaster technology
To be honest, this was my first time using a steamer, so I wasn’t sure what the outcome would be. And wow, this has been a total saviour for the kitchen and hallway floor; it took dried-on mud on paw prints straight off without any floor cleaning solution. It really is one of the best steam cleaners on the market.
Unlike regular steam mops, which are only effective when you continuously push a stationary pad in front of you, the Shark has high-speed rotating pads which do the work for you, with a jet of extra-hot steam coming from them.
The automated scrub takes care of the work for you, with little elbow grease required. Tile and hard floors are left sparkling clean, fully sanitised, and dry in a matter of minutes, and you can simply throw the pads in the washing machine after use.

Best spray mop
Type: Manual spray mop
Capacity: Integrated refillable liquid reservoir
Head Type: Dual-sided (Microfiber side + Scrubbing pad side)
Storage: Integrated wall-hanging bracket included
Key Feature: Flip-head mechanism to instantly switch between sweeping and scrubbing
This is excellent for quick, everyday touch-ups where you can’t face the bucket. I particularly love using this in the ensuite and main bathroom, so I don’t need to lug anything heavy up the stairs. It comes with a refillable bottle that dispenses a very fine, mist-like spray over your floor, but the brilliant part is that it has a double-sided cleaning head.
One side has a cushioned microfibre pad to whisk away dust or everyday spills; flip it over to uncover a bonus scrubbing pad, which takes on dried-up grime with ease, eliminating the need to scrub on your hands and knees. It requires zero setup time and makes tackling unexpected messes completely effortless.

Power Source: Rechargeable lithium-ion battery
Tank Setup: Dual-tank technology (Clean water supply + Dirty water extraction)
Head Type: Motorised high-speed wet roller
Key Feature: Active dirty water extraction system for continuous fresh-water cleaning
I initially mistook this for a steam mp, but it is, in fact, a sophisticated electric floor cleaner. For large open-plan spaces, this electric powerhouse takes almost all the physical labour out of floor care. It employs quick-moving motorised rollers for continuous replenishment of water onto the floor, then it removes dirty water automatically into a separate tank built into the interior. This means you are strictly cleaning with pristine water from start to finish.
It moves effortlessly over hard floors, and the cordless runtime leaves you free to complete several rooms with just one charge.

Best compact spin mop
Also available from Dunelm
Type: Flat head spin mop with dual internal water containers
Bucket System: Inner/outer chamber bucket separating clean and dirty water
Head Type: Rectangular microfiber flat mop head
Storage: Ultra-compact footprint with carry handle
Key Feature: Integrated water separation mechanism and top scraper brush for hair/debris
If you love the deep-cleaning capability of a classic string mop like my old Vileda but have limited storage space and want something that also separates dirty water, this compact spin system is a brilliant solution. There’s a foot pedal action incorporated in the bucket to rapidly rotate the mop head, throwing out the water so you get to clean the floor immediately after.
When you push the flat head into the slot in the middle, an all-in-one comb-style scraper removes any loose bits of dog hair and grit directly into the dirty chamber. It then folds back to a surprisingly flat profile that fits snugly in small kitchen slots.

FAQs
How often should you mop your floors?
For heavily trafficked areas such as the kitchen, hallway and dining room, you will most likely need to mop every week to keep dirt and grease at bay. If pets or small children are running tracked in dirt every day, go around and spritz the high-traffic areas with a spray mop every two days to keep things clean.
Areas less used, such as home offices or guest bedrooms, only really require mopping around once every two or three weeks.
Do you need to use a floor cleaner, or is water enough?
For everyday dust and light surface clean-ups, simple warm water and a good microfiber pad are usually enough to remove superficial dirt. However, water is not strong enough to dissolve grease from stubborn cooking grease, sticky residue from food scraps, or pet messes.
Using a dedicated floor cleaner provides surfactants that dissolve grease and leave a streak-free, fragrant finish – just be careful not to overdose, as excess detergent leaves a sticky residue that actually attracts dirt faster.
Remember, when using a steam mop, ensure the tank is filled with plain tap or distilled water only. Using chemical detergents can clog and damage the heating element.
Recommended floor cleaners to pair with your mop:
Best for Wood & Laminate: Bona Wood Floor Cleaner Spray, available from Amazon – A pH-neutral, fast-drying formula that cleans effectively without leaving dulling residue or damaging sensitive wood seals.
Best Eco-Friendly Pick: Method Rhubarb Hard Floor Cleaner, available from Amazon – An easy squirt-and-mop formula that smells incredible, uses plant-based ingredients, and requires no dilution or bucket mixing.
Best Deep Cleaner for Tile & Stone: Flash Multi-Surface Floor Liquid Cleaner, available from Amazon – Ideal for heavy-duty kitchen floor mopping, cutting through grease and pet tracks with ease.
Is a steam mop safe for engineered wood and laminate floors?
Use caution when using steam mops on unsealed, warped, or delicate laminate and real wood floors. The high temperatures and moisture content in pressurised steam mean that it can seep into any unsealed joints and lead to warping, swelling or delamination in timber.
If you do use a steam mop on sealed wooden floors, always select a low/gentle setting and keep the mop moving continuously so heat doesn’t sit in one spot.
How do I clean and care for reusable microfiber mop pads?
For the best longevity of the microfiber pads, clean them in the washing machine after every two or three uses, or immediately after you’ve dealt with big muddy spills. Wash using a warm setting and normal laundry detergent, but make sure you absolutely do not use fabric softener or bleach in any washing or drying process.
Fabric softeners oil up the delicate microfibers in their construction and are the killer of their dust- and liquid-retaining capabilities. Air-drying works perfectly, and washing on a gentle setting in the dryer on a low heat setting is also sufficient.
Are spray mops better than traditional mop and bucket sets?
It completely depends on what job needs to be done. Spray mops are superior for quick, everyday jobs and when tidying up before guests are expected, as there’s no filling up or heavy lifting.
However, for deep-cleaning dried-on grime or sanitising large kitchen tile floors, a dedicated mop and bucket set or a powered electric/steam mop provides much better downward pressure and cleaning capacity.
When it comes to choosing the right mop, it all really comes down to what kind of floor you have, where it’s going to be stored, and how hard you want it to work. If you want hygienic cleaning without reusing dirty rinse water, the Joseph Joseph UltraClean Cleaning System is the best mop overall.
For chemical-free sanitising that erases muddy prints, the Shark Steam & Scrub takes top honours as the best steam mop, while the Joseph Joseph CleanTech Spray Mop is perfect for quick daily spot-cleaning.
Keeping your floors clean actually entails a look at the bigger picture. Running one of the best vacuum cleaners first removes grit so you don’t drag dirt across your finish, while pairing your mop with the best hard floor cleaners ensures you lift grime without leaving a sticky residue.
